Course aim

  • To provide basic information and areas of responsibility for health, safety and the environment
  • To understand the implications of hazard recognition/risk assessment and effects on individuals and the employer
  • To demonstrate how individual behaviour can help reduce accidents.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course delegates will have the knowledge to:

  • Demonstrate their understanding of the subjects by successfully completing each assessment paper
  • Appreciate how they personally can influence good standards within health, safety & the environment
  • Understand the value of risk assessment and have the knowledge to recognise when change to a generic assessment is required
  • Understand the common hazards associated with work.

MODULE 1 – Landfill gas

The session will introduce landfill gas odour, fire and explosion

MODULE 2 – Electrical hazards

The module will examine the cause of common electrical hazards and the effects of electric shock:

  • Earthing
  • Fuses and RCDs
  • Battery powered tools
  • Testing and maintenance of portable equipment

MODULE 3 – Tools, plant and machinery

The session will introduce Electrical Machinery Regulations, employer and employee duties, hand tools and specific risks

MODULE 4 – Lock out / isolation

The session will demonstrate lock out / isolation, procedures, why? what? when?

MODULE 5 – Fire safety

The session will highlight risk of fire associated with power stations, along with precautions against spills and leaks:

  • Fire management of risks
  • Fire avoidance
  • Use of fire extinguishers

MODULE 6 – Working at height

The session will discuss in detail the hazards associated with all forms of access and egress including the importance of the risk assessment process, the safe use of ladders and stepladders, the use of scaffolding including erection and dismantling, the use of both scaffold towers and mobile scaffold towers and working on roofs, confined spaces and excavations and stress. In addition candidates will be made aware of the varied precautions which can be taken

MODULE 7 – Environmental

The session covers current and future environmental requirements, safe storage and marking, waste control hierarchies and emergency planning in the event of problems
